Interpretation:
The general properties of gases are to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Gases do not have a definite volume or shape. They occupy the entire accessible space. As the binding forces are very weak, gaseous molecules are weak as well. The molecules of a gas are in continuous motion and have a high kinetic energy.
Explanation of Solution
The general properties of gases are discussed below.
Compressibility:
As the intermolecular spaces are high between gaseous molecules, the pressure exerted on them decreases the volume of the gas. This is known as the compressibility of gases. When the temperature decreases, the amount of energy becomes less, and hence, the mobility is diminished. Due to this, the volume of the gas decreases.
Expansibility:
When pressure is removed, the gas expands. When the temperature increases, energy is gained by the constituent particles. Due to this, they travel faster and away from each other. Thus, the volume of the gas increases.
Ability to diffuse:
The motion of the gaseous molecules is continuous and they move at a very high velocity. The intermolecular spaces are very high. When two gases are mixed, the gaseous particles can pass through the intermolecular spaces of the other. Due to this, both gases get completely mixed. Thus, the mixture of gases remains homogenous.
Low density:
The intermolecular spaces in gases are very high and its volume is very large as compared to its mass. Hence, they have low densities.
Exertion of pressure:
The gases exert pressure in all directions in a vessel.
The general properties of gases have been discussed above.
