Common carriers:

A common carrier is a private company that sells or rents communication services to the public. Common carriers are profitable, and their major products are services for voice and data transmissions. It is covered by both wired circuits as well as cellular services.

• It offers a wide range of computer-based services, such as the manufacturing and marketing of specialized communication hardware and software.

Local exchange carriers (LECs):

Local telephone services are called local exchange carriers that are provided by common carriers. LECs move into the long-distance market.

• Example of local telephone service is “BellSouth”.

Interexchange carriers (IXC):

Long-distance services are commonly called interexchange carriers that are provided by common carriers. IXCs move into the local telephone market.

• Example of long-distance service is AT&T.
