Concept introduction
In the United States, most infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with working parents are enrolled in child care programs. Young children may spend as much as 36 hours per week at daycare. Researchers were interested in determining if the extensive amount of time children spend in daycare impacts their ability to become securely attached.
Explanation of Solution
Suggested responses
Researchers believe that high quality daycare can have a positive impact on children. However, it may be difficult to distinguish between what classifies as high or low-quality care. What’s more, high-quality care may not be available to all children.
The impact of daycare may be overemphasized in some cases when the child does not have sensitive and responsive parental care at home. In such cases, even a positive daycare environment may not counteract an insecure attachment developed from the primary caregiver at home.
