Scientist Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) is often called the "father of modern genetics" and is famous for his work involving
the inheritance of certain traits in pea plants. Suppose that the genes controlling the color of peas are Y for yellow and y
for green. Each plant has two genes, one from the female (seed) and one from the male (pollen). The Y gene is dominant,
and therefore a plant with genes YY will have yellow peas, a plant with genes Yy or yY will have yellow peas, and a plant
with genes yy will have green peas.
If a plant with two yellow genes (YY) is crossed with a plant with two green genes (yy), the result is four hybrid offspring
with genotypes Yy. The offspring will be yellow, but will carry the recessive green gene.

Some traits of plants and animals depend on inheritance of a single gene. This is called Mendelian inheritance, after Gregor Mendel (1822-1884). Each of us has an ABO blood type, which describes whether two characteristics called A and B are present. Every human being has two blood type alleles (gene forms), one inherited from our mother and one from our father. Each of these alleles can be A, B, or O. Which two we inherit determines our blood type. Here is a table that shows what our blood type is for each combination of two alleles.

We inherit each of a parent's two alleles with probability 0.5. We inherit independently from our mother and father.
What is the probability that both children have different blood types?
The viruses causing problems in strawberry plants are mainly spread by one insect, the strawberry aphid. Carly believes that as aphids feed on leaves, they transmit viruses that can cause a rapid decrease in plant growth. She decides to verify whether or not the number of strawberry aphids found on a plant could be linked to its growth. She therefore randomly chooses 5 strawberry plants at the same stage of development in a virus-infested garden. For each individual plant, she first collects all the aphids present on the plant and weighs them, and then weighs the entire plant to have a measure of plant growth. She obtains the following data. (Attach on side)
Is Carly correct in thinking that when the number of aphids on a plant is larger, the growth of the plant is affected (i.e., its weight is smaller)? Apply the appropriate statistical method with a test of significance at α = 0.05.

- Biologists wish to mate pairs of fruit flies having genetic makeup RrCc, indicating that each has one dominant gene (R) and one recessive gene (r) for eye color, along with one dominant (C) and one recessive (c) gene for wing type. Each offspring will receive one gene for each of the two traits from each parent, so the biologists predict that the following phenotypes should occur in a ratio of 9:3:3:1. Phenotype Frequency Red eyes and Red eyes and straight wings curly wings 99 42 White eyes and straight wings 49 White eyes and curly wings 10 Use a chi-square goodness-of-fit test to compute a test statistic and P-value. At the a = 0.05 significance level, what can be concluded about the proposed genetic model? Because the P-value of 0.1029 > 0.05, we cannot reject the null hypothesis. We do not have convincing evidence that the distribution of eye color and wing shape is different from what the biologists predict. Because the P-value of 0.5177 > 0.05, we cannot reject the null…arrow_forwardExample 2.9 Suppose that a particular trait of a person (such as eye color or left handedness) is classified on the basis of one pair of genes and suppose that d represents a dominant gene and r a recessive gene. Thus a person with dd genes is pure dominance, one with rr is pure recessive, and one with rd is hybrid. The pure dominance and the hybrid are alike in appearance. Chil- dren receive one gene from each parent. If, with respect to a particular trait, two hybrid parents have a total of four children, what is the probability that exactly three of the four children have the outward appearance of the dominant gene?arrow_forward3.Luijckx et al (2012) discovered that resistance to the bacterial parasite Pasteuria ramose is genetically variable in the common freshwater crustacean, Daphnia magna. To investigate the genetic basis of this variation, they crossed a completely resistant lineage to a completely susceptible lineage. All the F1 offspring were resistant. These offspring, when mature, were then crossed to each other to produce an F2 generation. If resistance is the result of only a single gene with two forms (alleles) then resistant and susceptible F offspring should occur in a 3:1 ratio. Of 71 F2’s tested, 57 were resistant and 14 were susceptible. a.With these data, calculate the range of most plausible-values for the proportion of resistant offspring. Does the plausible range include the proportion predicted if resistance is determined by a single gene? b.Give two other values for proportion that are also consistent with the data. c.Test the genetic hypothesis. Are the results compatible with the…arrow_forward
- The coat color of black bears depends on a gene with two alleles. Allele B is dominant and confers black coat, whereas allele b is recessive and homozygous bears have white coats (albino black bears, I know it sounds weird but it is true). As we know from genetics each bear has two alleles and the coat colors are as follows: BB-black; Bb-black; bb-white. A researcher obtained the following data for the genotypes (BB, Bb or bb) of black bears: Genotype Number of bears BB 42 Bb 24 bb 21 You are performing the following hypothesis test: H0: The genotypes of the bears follow a binomial distribution, with a probability of receiving the b allele equal to the observed proportion of the b allele in the population. HA: The genotypes of the bears do not follow a binomial distribution What is the expected frequency of bears with genotype BB, Bb, and bb? Give the absolute expected frequency (number of bears) not the fraction/proportion of BB bearsarrow_forwardThe coat color of black bears depends on a gene with two alleles. To account for this, the researcher grows two seedlings from each of the 10 tomato varieties. One seedling of each variety gets side-dressed nitrogen and the other receives no side-dressing. In this study, the observation for each variety in a sample is matched with the observation for the same variety in the other sample. Suppose the researcher intends to compare the two groups of tomato varieties. What is the unit of interest and variable of interest? What is the appropriate test procedure in comparing the two groups (with and without side dressing)?arrow_forward
- An experiment in chicken breeding results in offspring having very curly, slightly curly, or normal feathers. If this is the result of a single gene system, then the proportions of offspring in the three phenotypes should be 0.25, 0.50, and 0.25 respectively. In one such experiment, 93 chickens were born. 20 had normal feathers, 50 had slightly curly feathers, and 23 had very curly feathers. Carry out a test to determine whether the genetic model seems to hold in this setting.arrow_forwardIn Mendel's genetic experiments many characteristics of the plants were quantified, such as their height (tall or short), flower position (axial or terminal), and seed color (colored or white). Suppose 100 plants are measured, and 39 are tall with axial flowers and colored seeds. Further, suppose a total of 29 plants have white seeds, 6 of them being short and 4 having terminal flowers. There are no short plants with terminal flowers, and the total number of short plants is 12. What is the probability a randomly selected plant will have flowers in the terminal position, but will not have white seeds? - In Mendel's genetic experiments many characteristics of the plants were quantified, such as their height (tall or short), flower position (axial or terminal), and seed color (colored or white). Suppose 100 plants are measured, and 35 are tall with axial flowers and colored seeds. Further, suppose a total of 27 plants have white seeds, 4 of them being short and 7 having terminal flowers. There are no short plants with terminal flowers, and the total number of short plants is 11 . What is the probability a randomly selected plant will have flowers in the terminal position, but will not have white seeds? Round your answer to three decimal places. Answer: Please don't handwriting solutionarrow_forwardYou have crossed pea plants that are homozygous recessive for two traits: flower color and pea shape - white flowers and wrinkled peas with a pea plant that is heterozygous for both traits, and therefore expressing purple flowers and round seeds. Pis purple flowers, and pis white flowers. R is round seeds, and r is wrinkled seeds. So your cross is pprr X PpRr. If the genes are unlinked, and undergoing independent assortment, you would expect to see a type of problem is available as a narrated power point in the resources page of this module. 1:1 ratio of plants with both dominant traits and plants with both recessive traits in the offspring "Hint - review FOIL method to resolve possible gametes. A walkthrough of this 9:3:3:1 ratio of plants with purple flowers and round seeds, plants with purple flowers and wrinkled seeds, plants with white flowers and round seeds, and plants with white flowers and wrinkled seeds O1:1:1:1 ratio of plants with purple flowers and round seeds, plants with…arrow_forwardIn an epic battle, the Green Goblin was able to wound Spider-Man and collect a sample of his cells, Utilizing a HuMouse model organism, the Goblin got the mutated chromosomes into the animals and began breeding them to determine the basis of their chromosomal inheritance. In the process of conducting his research, he discovered the gene associated with spider-like powers are actually three distinct genes: one for spider sense; one for super strength; one for enhanced agility. All genes appear to be dominant, so the Goblin runs a test cross and gets the following results: Phenotype Agility Number of Progeny 94 Agility and Sense 3 All 3 Powers 580 Sense 40 Strength and Agility 45 Strength and Sense 89 Strength No Powers 5 592 What is the interference?
