The trend in metallic character as a function of position in the periodic table is to be determined. Also whether this trend is the same as that of atomic size and ionization energy or not is to be determined.
Concept introduction:
The metallic character is characterized by the tendency of metals to lose their outermost valence shell electrons. Greater the ease of electron removal, higher will be the electropositivity of the corresponding elements and vice versa.
Atomic size is a measure of the size of the atoms It is the distance from the nucleus to the valence shell where the electrons are located More the number of shells in an atom, larger will be the atomic size and vice-versa.
The ionization energy is the amount of energy required to remove the most loosely bound valence electrons from an isolated neutral gaseous atom. Its value varies with the ease of removal of the outermost valence electrons.
