To determine
Find five examples of how engineers use graphical communication in their professional lives.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
We will take examples from both practicing engineers and professors. The following are some examples:
- Adhesive application that is the gramage of adhesive spread on a specific area and the bonding strength. In this condition, the gramage deposition say 50,100, and 150 and multiples of 50 can be laid on the x axis and corresponding adhesive strength of the joint plotted on the y-scale. This can be visualized clearly to provide the best deposition.
- The constituents of a material (say steel) can be well illustrated in a Pie chart indicating the percentage of elements.
- In the production of high pressure laminates, the papers are impregnated with phenol and melamine resins. The paper gramage can be 40, 80,120,160 gm/m2 and the impregnation will be twice the basic paper gramage. The Scratch resistance and surface properties can be evaluated and results plotted on the y-axis with the paper gramage along the x-axis. By analysing the graph, we can find the best and optimum conditions for the paper and resin loading.
- A drying process requires heat. The heat (calories) can be supplied from a boiler house and the fuels can be fuel oil, diesel, wood, electricity, and natural gas. The options are given to use any of these fuels and their costs are also made available. The engineer based on the heat requirement in the dryer will figure out the quantity of fuel required and based on the cost of the fuel will arrive at the total sum against each item. This will be done graphically for better appreciation and decide on the fuel for the boiler house.
- The shareholding of a company can be well illustrated in a Pie chart. This can be done by marking the area in the graph based on the percentage holding of each investor in the company.
Conclusion:
The above cited are the five examples of how engineers use graphical communication in their professional lives.
