Simons and Chabris wanted to find out people's beliefs about how memory functions. A set of different ideas were proposed to them and their responses were accumulated. One of the statements among many was that human memory works like a video camera, and around 63 percent of respondents agreed to this statement. These people believed that whatever they witness gets accurately recorded in their mind which enables them to recall the same event with precision.

However, the accuracy of this belief is debatable, because encoding of information as well as retrieving the information can be subjected to alterations and changes due to various reasons. One possible explanation is that no two people perceive the world in the same way and thus their interpretation of each event would be colored by their subjective analysis and perceptions.
