An organism (cell) is termed as allopolyploid when it possesses chromosomes made up of two or more genomes. These sets of chromosomes are non-homologous and are unable to form homologous pairs which results in infertile progeny. Example of allopolyploid is an organism like plants which have a number of sets of chromosomes obtained from various species. The organism that possesses one set of chromosomes obtained from two distinct species is termed as allodiploid.
