To discuss:
Basic terms related to genetics and drug therapy.
Concept Introduction:
Genetics is the branch of biology that deals with the study of genes and genomes and gene-related diseases. The way to treat such genetic disorders by drugs or conventional gene therapy paves the way for a new branch of science called pharmacogenomics, and pharmacogenetics is an important field of modern therapeutics.
Explanation of Solution
Genetics is the branch of biology that deals with gene, genome, and all its associated disease patterns. Genetic disorders like Thalassemia, Hemophilia, SCID, and neurofibromatosis etc. are treated using drugs in ancient and modern times. After the advent of gene therapy, the defective genes in the genome that gives rise to disease are altered and replaced by the normal gene.
Pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics are the common terms that relate both to genetics and drug therapy. Pharmacogenomics deals with the combined effect of the whole genome and its reaction toward a particular drug in the living system.
Pharmacogenetics deals with the unified response of a single variant gene and its reaction towards a particular drug in the living system.
Pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics are the basic terminologies that relate to both genetics and drug therapy.
