Chapter 8, Problem 11P
You are standing on a sheet of ice that covers the football stadium parking lot in Buffalo; there is negligible friction between your feet and the ice. A friend throws you a 0.400 kg ball that is traveling horizontally at 10.0 m/s. Your mass is 70.0 kg. (a) If you catch the ball, with what speed do you and the ball move afterward? (b) If the ball hits you and bounces off your chest, so that afterward it is moving horizontally at 8.00 m/s in the opposite direction, what is your speed after the collision?

A child with mass of 16.5 kg stands on the edge of a park bench and leaps into the air. Her initial speed is 2.4 m/s directed at an angle of 30 degrees above the horizontal. After 0.28 seconds what is the horizontal component of her velocity in m/s?
A box of mass M=1980 g, filled with sand, is suspended from a 1=1.5 m long rope. The length of the rope is much larger than the dimensions of the box. A bullet with mass m=20 g flying with a velocity of v=500 m/s in the horizontal direction hits the box and gets stuck. Find the maximum deviation angle of the rope from the vertical. Neglect the drag force of the air. Take g=10m/s^2.
A loaded gun is dropped on a frozen lake. The gun fires, with the bullet going horizontally in one direction and the gun sliding on the ice in the other direction. The bullet's mass is 0.04 kg, and its speed is 320 m/s. If the gun's mass is 2.2 kg, what is its speed (in m/s)?
