Write the expression of moment of inertia along x axis.

Here, mass of the cylinder is m, radius of the cylinder is r and length of the cylinder is l.

Write the expression of moment of inertia along z axis.

I=Izz=mr2

Obtain the ratio of moment of inertia.

IoI=12m(r2+l26)mr2IoI=12+112(lr)2

Direct precession:

  IoI>1

  12+112(lr)2>1(lr)2>6(lr)>6

Thus, the motion is in direct precession if (lr)>6.

Retrograde precession:

  IoI<1
