Summary Introduction

The respiratory system is comprised of organs that are involved in breathing. This includes the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. In humans and other animals, lungs are considered as the primary organs of the respiratory system. In the chest cavity, the lungs are two large organs that play an important role in filtering oxygen. The lungs also protect an individual from harmful substances such as pollution, smoke, viruses, and bacteria. The lungs trap and destroy these substances in the mucus, which is made by the lung. Later, the mucus is eliminated from the body through swallowing or coughing. Lungs play an important role in exchanging gases. Lungs are surrounded by a thin layer known as pleura.
