The occipital bone is a trapezoidal shaped bone and is one of the cranial bones that contribute to the lateral, posterior, and inferior surfaces of the cranium. The jugular foramen is located between the temporal bone and the occipital bone. The hypophyseal canal in the occipital bone permits the hypophyseal nerve passage in the skull.
