Concept explainers
To explain the difference between refusals, non-adherers and dropouts in an experimental study and also explain why must researchers be concerned about these three groups.
Explanation of Solution
Refusals are individuals who do not wish to participate in a study. This may introduce bias into a study if those individuals who refuse to participate are all different from the study's other participants.
Non-adherers are individuals who participate in a study but do not follow the outlined treatment. This may introduce bias because by not following the treatment, the significance of the treatment cannot be accurately measured.
Dropouts are individuals who participate in a study but quit the study before the study is complete. This may introduce bias into a study if the individuals who drop out do so because of a reaction to the treatment.
