Textbook Question
Chapter 6.1, Problem 79E
For a manufacturing company, finding the number of defective items they are likely to produce is really important. A study at a plant that produces microchips for use in smart phones indicates that the number of defective items produced by any given worker can be estimated by the expression 2.2x − 0.6y + 9.6, where x is the number of hours worked in that shift, and y is the number of chips produced. Who is likely to produce more defective chips: a worker that makes 40 chips in a seven hour shift, or one that makes 46 chips in a 10-hour shift? By how many?

A researcher believed that the number of rental cars in service by a car rental company would have an impact on the total annual revenue for that car rental company. Five small car rental companies were surveyed, with the number of Cars in service recorded in units of 1000 (so if a car rental company had 54000 cars in service, a 54 would be recorded) and Annual Revenue measured in millions of dollars (so an Annual Revenue of $10,000,000 would be recorded as 10). The data follows:
Cars (1,000s) Annual Revenue ($ millions)11.5 118

Five small car rental companies were surveyed, with the number of Cars in service recorded in units of 1000 (so if a car rental company had 54000 cars in service, a 54 would be recorded) and Annual Revenue measured in millions of dollars (so an Annual Revenue of $10,000,000 would be recorded as 10). - A study was developed to evaluate effectiveness of a weight loss diet plan. An ad was placed in two towns to locate study participants who were to follow the diet. In Town A, the clinicians asked each dieter to report how much weight they had lost over the previous 6 weeks while following the diet. In Town B, the clinicians weighed each dieter at the beginning of the study and again after 6 weeks on the diet program. The weight lost was calculated as the difference between the beginning weight and the weight after 6 weeks. At the end of the study, it was determined that Town B had lost significantly less weight than Town A. 1.What is the population of interest in this situation? 2.
