Chapter 6, Problem 4PP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

A hypothetical free energy diagram for the SN2 reaction of iodide anion with 1-chlorobutane is to be drawn and leveled.

Concept introduction:

The SN2 reaction takes place in one step. The nucleophile attacks the alkyl halide from the side opposite to the leaving group.

In SN2 reaction, both, the bond formation and bond breaking occur simultaneously, leading to a transition state which contains a partial negative charge on the incoming nucleophile and the leaving group.

The SN2 reaction that occurs with loss of energy to surroundings is exergonic. In these reactions, the free energy change is negative.

13. (18 pts) Spiropentane, shown on the left, reacts with Cl2 in the presence of light to furnish the two products shown on the right. Given that Cl2 is readily cleaved by light, provide a detailed step-by-step mechanism for the formation of the two products from the common intermediate shown in brackets, and also show the mechanism for the formation of the common intermediate from spiropentane. Use curved arrows to detail electron flow. Cl Cl2 Cl Cl hv Cl Cl
