Oregon Ducks, Inc. is considering buying licenses
for 12 megahertz of wireless spectrum in the 700
MHz range, which is suitable for delivering
television to mobile phones. The 700 MHz signals
can travel long distances and more easily
penetrate walls and other obstacles. The
acquisition cost is $300 million. In addition,
because networks that operate in the 700 MHz
range are less expensive to build than those in
other portions of the spectrum, Ducks estimates
annual costs of $24 million over the next 9 years
and no salvage value. During the same period, the
company expects to generate annual revenue of
$40 million by offering television and video to
mobile-phone users. Calculate the net present
worth of this investment if the company's minimum
attractive rate of return (discount rate) is 13% per
year.
For a motor to operate a pump, a design engineer must choose the horsepower. Horsepower rating is a design characteristic that can vary from 10 to 40 horsepower. The motor will cost $120 per year to operate, plus $0.60 per horsepower. The running expenses of such motors will be $0.055 per horsepower-hour divided by the horsepower rating. Each year, 9,000 horsepower-hours will be required.
Determine how much horsepower should be supplied to keep the overall yearly cost to a minimal.
Demonstrate that your entire cost each year has been reduced.

- A diesel engine uses type A filter and high end lubricating oil costing $5.50 per liter. With this filter the oil and filter have to be change every 500 hours of operation, and 5 liters of oil have to be added every 100 hours. This filter costs $148 per piece. 80 liters of oil fill the engine. Another type, Filter B, costing $120 may be used with a lower grade of oil costing $4.80 per liter. However if this filter is used, the oil and the filter had to be change every 300 hrs and 10 liters are added after each 150 hrs the engine is used. Which type of filter would you recommend?arrow_forwardThe packing cooling tower that cools condensing water for a power plant progressively detcriorates and results in gradually rising costs due to reduced plant efficiency. These costs are treated as lump sums at the end of the year, as showm in Fig 3:6-The cost is zero for the first year and then increases $1000 per year until the packing is 16 years old, when replacement is mandatory. At a point 8 years into the life of the packing (just aſter the $7000. annual cost has been assessed), a decision is to be made on the plan for the next 8 years i.e., whether to replace the packing or to continue with the existing packing. Money can be borrowed at 9 percent interest, compounded annually. What is the maxinmum amount that could be paid for the packing in order to justify its replacement ?arrow_forwardAn oil refinery finds that it is necessary to treat the waste liquids from a new process before discharging them into a stream. The treatment will cost $30,000 the first year, but process improvements will allow the costs to decline by $3,000 each year. As an alternative, an outside company will process the wastes for the fixed price of $15,000/year throughout the 10 year period, payable at the beginning of each year. Either way, there is no need to treat the wastes after 10 years. Use the annual worth method to determine how the wastes should be processed. The company's MARR is 6%.arrow_forward

The treatment will cost $40,000 the first year, but process improvements will allow the costs to decline by $4,000 each year. As an alternative, an outside company will process the wastes for the fixed price of $20,000/year throughout the 11 year period, payable at the beginning of each year. The company plans to purchase a new portable system at the end of next year at a cost of $9,000. Dupont can purchase a 1-year option for $100,000 that will provide time to pilot test the LLD process or Dupont can acquire the license now at a cost of $1.8 million plus 25% of sales paid annually to the license owner. If they wait 1 year, the cost will increase to $1.9 million plus 30% of sales paid annually. If sales are estimated to be $1,000,000 per year over the 5-year license period, should Dupont purchase the license now or purchase the option now and possibly license it after the 1-year test period? Now the cost of jetfuel has doubled from what it was four years ago. A recent engineering graduate employed by the company has made a recommendation to reduce fuel consumption of an aircraft by installing leather seats as part of a “cabin refurbishment program.” The total reduction in weight would be approximately 600 pounds per aircraft. If seats are replaced annually (a worst-case situation), how much can this airline afford to spend on the cabin refurbishments? What nonmonetary advantages might be associated with the refurbishments? Would you support the engineer’s recommendation?arrow_forward
- ENGINEERING ECONOMY RATE WILL BE GIVEN. WRITE THE COMPLETE SOLUTIONS/EXPLANATION LEGIBLY OR TYPEWRITTEN. GIVE STRAIGHT TO THE POINT EXPLANATION. Two alternative designs are under consideration for a tapered fastening pin. The fastening pins are sold for $0.70 each. Either design will serve equally well and will involve the same material and manufacturing cost except for the lathe and drill operations. Design A will require 12 hours of lathe time and 5 hours of drill time per 1,000 units. Design B will require 7 hours of lathe time and 8 hours of drill time per 1,000 units. The variable operating cost of the lathe, including labor, is $18.60 per hour. The variable operating cost of the drill, including labor, is $16.90 per hour. Finally, there is a sunk cost of $5,000 for Design A and $9,000 for Design B due to obsolete tooling. a. Which design should be adopted if 125,000 units are sold each year?b. What is the annual saving over the other design?arrow_forwardpolarization 5. Handheld fiber-optic meters with white light interferometry are useful for measuring temperature, pressure, and strain in electrically noisy environments. The fixed costs associated with manufacturing are Php40M per year. If a base unit sells for Php180k and its variable cost is Php120k, A. how many units must be sold each year for breakeven and B. what will the profit be for sales of 3000 units per year?arrow_forwardA transportation engineer received a request to install dynamic traffic signals to replace static vehicle control devices at an intersection. The engineer must prepare an estimate of an operating budget for a 10-year period, if the signals were installed. The initial cost of the signals is $35,000 and the installation costs are $12,000. The estimated energy cost to operate the signals for the first year is $1000. The energy cost is expected to increase uniformly each year by 1.5% of the first year's energy cost. Assume an interest rate of 8%. What is the EUAC for the operating budget? Salvage value at the end of the 10-year period is negligible.arrow_forward
