Chapter 6, Problem 1VQP
To determine

Estimate the current year consumer price index (CPI).

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

Consumer price index (CPI) can be calculated using the following formula:

Consumer price index=(Current year total expenditureBase year total expenditure)×100        (1)

Current year consumer price index (CPI):

If the market basket consists of 10A and 20B with the current year prices of $2 and $4, respectively, and if the base year prices for A and B are $1 and $2.50, respectively, then the consumer price index can be calculated using Equation (1) as follows:

Consumer price index=((10×2)+(20×4)(10×1)(20×2.5))×100=(20+8010+50)×100=1.67×100=167

Thus, the value of the current year consumer price index (CPI) is 167.

Calculate the compound growth rate for the period of 2003 to 2012. 2. Based on your answer to part a, forecast sales for both 2013 and 2014. 3. Now calculate the compound growth rate for the period of 2007 to 2012. 1. Based on your answer to part e, forecast sales for both 2013 and 2014. 5. What is the major reason for the differences in your answers to parts b and d? If you were to make your own projections, what would you forecast? (Drawing a graph is very helpful.)
