The types of stratigraphic correlation that geologists undertake

Answer to Problem 1RQ
Lithologic correlation and temporal correlation are the two kinds of stratigraphic correlation that geologists undertake.
Explanation of Solution
Stratigraphic correlation is a method used by geologists to gather the information about the widely spread rocks. Correlation is a method of establishing relation between geographically separated parts of a stratigraphic unit. This correlation tells about the geological age and position of rocks.
The kinds of stratigraphic correlation that geologists undertake are as follows:
(i) Lithologic correlation: The lithologic correlation involves constructing diagrammatic cross sections of strata to establish the geometric relationships and able to interpret their modes of origin.
(ii) Temporal correlation: The temporal correlation involves establishing relationship between the strata and the time they were deposited. In an undisturbed sequence of strata (sediment deposited) the oldest strata lie at the bottom and successively higher strata are relatively younger. In other words, in interrupted strata each bed of rock is younger than the bed below it and older than the bed above it
