Explanation of Solution

Sanctions vary from one culture to the next. What is appropriate and received as positive in one culture may be considered deviant and received as negative in another culture. In general, minor acts of deviance are often ignored. For example, in some cultures personal space is very important. Imagine a group of co-workers standing by the water fountain discussing an upcoming event at work. While most of the people are at arm’s length apart, one co-worker is touching the people next to her. While this may violate the norms of a culture, it is not serious enough to spark a punishment in most cultures. Her behavior may be ignored or the people next to her might shift slightly away without addressing the issue.
