To review:
The given blank space in the statement, “according to the first law of thermodynamics, energy can be neither _________ nor __________. Energy occurs in two major forms: _________, the energy of movement, and _________, or stored energy.”
Introduction:
Energy is a quantitative property, which is required to do work and can be of two basic types. One type of energy is the one which is stored energy and is known as potential energy. The other type of energy is characterized by movement and is known as kinetic energy.
Explanation of Solution
According to the law of conservation of energy, the entire energy of a system always remains constant. In other words, energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It can be transformed from one form to another. This principle is known as the law of conservation of energy and is stated as the first law of thermodynamics.
The main two types of energy are – kinetic energy and potential energy. The kinetic energy is characterized by movement or motion. For example, a person running in a marathon or a ball rolling downhill or a moving car are using kinetic energy. The other type of energy is potential energy, which is characterized by the position of the object. It is, therefore, the stored energy in an object. For example, an object kept at a height or a compressed string.
According to the first law of thermodynamics, energy can be neither destroyed nor created. Energy occurs in two major forms: kinetic energy, the energy of movement, and potential energy, or stored energy.
