Summary Introduction

To describe: The basic sequence of events taking place at the neuromuscular junction.

Introduction: The nervous system controls the skeletal muscle fiber contraction. It controls the muscle fiber at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), which is a specialized intracellular connection situated midway along the length of the muscle fiber.

Explanation of Solution

The sequence of events taking place at a neuromuscular junction:

  • The motor neuron presents at the neuromuscular junction’s release acetylcholine (ACh) that alters the permeability of the plasma membrane.
  • This change permits the entry of positive charges. This in turn generates an action potential or electrical impulse in the sarcolemma.
  • The action potential or electrical impulse spreads across the muscle fiber’s surface and also into the interior along the transverse or T tubules.
  • The calcium ion (which are released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum) concentration in the cytoplasm increases, which in turns triggers the muscle fiber contraction.
  • The acetylcholinesterase (AChE) removes the ACh from motor end plate and synaptic cleft and as a result, the contraction ends.
