Use the two steps for solving a linear programming problem, given in the box on page 606, to solve the problems in Exercises 17–23.
19. Food and clothing are shipped to survivors of a natural disaster. Each carton of food will feed 12 people, while each carton of clothing will help 5 people. Each 20-cubic-foot box of food weighs 50 pounds and each 10-cubic-foot box of clothing weighs 20 pounds. The commercial carriers transporting food and clothing are bound by the following constraints:
- The total weight per carrier cannot exceed 19,000 pounds.
- The total volume must be less than 8000 cubic feet.
How many cartons of food and clothing should be sent with each plane shipment to maximize the number of people who can be helped?

- A tortoise challenged a hare to a 100-meter race on a track. The tortoise negotiated a 50-meter head start with the hare. When the race started the hare was running at a constant speed of 2.8 meters per second and the tortoise was crawling at a speed of 0.5 meters per second. (They both maintained these speeds for the entire race.) Our goal is to determine who won the race. Read the above problem statement again, then explain in writing on a sheet of paper how you will determine who won the race. Construct a drawing to represent the 100-meter length of the track. Then place the tortoise and hare's starting points on the track. Define the variable t to represent the number of seconds since the start of the race. Write an expression to represent the Tortoise's distance from the starting line in terms of t. Represent the Hare's distance from the starting line in terms of t. Write a formula to represent the distance, d (in meters), that the tortoise is ahead of the hare in…arrow_forwardKindly give me a detailed responsearrow_forwardSo, what does "dynamic programming" really entail?arrow_forward
- A manufacturing company makes two types of water skis, a trick ski and a slalom ski. The relevant manufacturing data are given in the table Labor-Hours per Ski Department Fabricating Finishing If the profit on a trick ski is $50 and the profit on a slalom ski is $30, how many of each type of ski should be manufactured each day to realize a maximum proffe? - Please use R-programming. Please provide the source code that makes the program run, and then screenshot the output. Question: Suppose a parallel reliability system consists of cables of wires holding a bridge andthat one of them must have at least 90 wires. If the reliability of a single wire is 0.25 what is a minimal number of wires counted from 90 (or more) should that cable have in order to maintain the reliability of the system to at least 0.95?arrow_forwardLPParrow_forwardYou are part of a government task force evaluating whether new models of cars will meet fuel efficiency standards set out by the newly signed climate bill. You have run an ANCOVA model that predicts fuel efficiency (in miles per gallon) as a function of vehicle weight (measured in thousands of lbs, where a value of 2.5 would correspond to 2,500 lbs), horsepower, and number of cylinders in the car (cylinders is a factor in this model with 3 levels: 4 cylinders, 6 cylinders, and 8 cylinders). Your analysis tells you the following; The mean miles per gallon of all cars analyzed is 20.09 The mean weight of all cars analyzed is 3.217 thousand lbs The mean horsepower of all cars analyzed is 146.7 The regression coefficient for weight is -3.18 miles per gallon per additional thousand lbs The regression coefficient for horsepower is -0.023 miles per gallon per additional unit of horsepower Cars with 4 cylinders get 2.13 more miles per gallon, on average, than the average car Toyota is…arrow_forward
