Answer to Problem 5.64P

  The ratio:- TroundTelliptical=2.67

Given information:

The equation:-

  Round casting;- d=0.3m   and  l=0.5m

Another casting is of elliptical cross-section:

  Major axis(a)=3×minor axis(b)Length:  L=0.5m

Cross-sectional area of elliptical casting is same as of round casting. Both casting are done at same conditions.

Explanation of Solution

Calculation:

First determine the surface area and volume for each casting shapes:-

Round casting:-

  ( A Surface)round=2πr(l+r)=2π×0.15×(0.5+0.15)( A Surface)round=0.613 m3Vround=πr2l=π(0.15)2(0.5)=0.0353 m3

Elliptical casting:-

  ( A elliptical)cross-section=( A round)cross-sectionπab=πr2also,    a=3b  3b2=r2  3b2=(0.15)2b=0.0866 mand  a=0.260 m    ( A Surface)elliptical=2π[ab+ a 2+ b 2l]( A Surface)elliptical=2π[0.26×0.0866+ 0.26 2+ ( 0.0866 ) 2×0.5]( A Surface)elliptical=1.002m2Velliptical=πabl=π×0.0866×0.260×0.5Velliptical=0.0353 m3

Now, as per the chvarinov’s rule.

Solidification time,

  T=C( Volume Surface area)2   T roundT elliptical= ( V A Surface ) round2 ( V A Surface ) round2T roundT elliptical= ( 0.0353 0.613 )2 ( 0.0353 1.002 )2T roundT elliptical=2.67

Conclusion: The ratio of solidification times of two casting is 2.67.

A) In a factory, an s-type pitot tube was used to calculate the velocity of dry air for a point inside a stack. Calculate the velocity at that point (ft/sec) using following conditions: ● • • Pressure = 30.23 ± 0.01 in Hg (ambient) Pitot tube coefficient = 0.847 ± 0.03 Temperature = 122 ± 0.1 F (stack) Temperature = 71.2 ± 0.1 F (ambient) AP = 0.324 ± 0.008 in H2O (pitot tube) • AP = 0.891 ± 0.002 in H2O (stack) B) Find the dominant error(s) when determining precision for the problem. C) For part A, what is the precision in ft/sec for the velocity?
