Explanation of Solution
List the steps involved in the design of bridge to cross a major river, in accordance with the steps shown in Figure 5.1 as follows:
- 1. Needs Assessment: All the information related to the construction site such as location of site, cost estimation of bridge, construction material required etc.., is collected.
- 2. Establishment of Design Goals: The design goals are established before the execution of work. The design goals decide the cost and time duration of the bridge construction, it also decides the quality standards and quantity of each and every construction material used in the bridge construction.
- 3. Generation of Prototypes: Before the construction of the actual bridge, different prototypes (small replica) of the bridge are made, considering the site condition and other dynamic parameters. Each prototype is having a unique in terms of design, cost and performance.
- 4. Evaluation of alternative solutions: These prototypes of the bridge are analysed for the structural stability and loading conditions and also under different climatic conditions.
- 5. Select a Solution, Make Recommendations: Based on the analysis of the prototypes, the best design which is most suitable in terms of performance, cost and project duration is selected.
- 6. Communicate the Solution: The designer discuss with the client about the selected design and gets the approval from the client for the execution of work. The designer communicates the approved design in the form of construction drawings to the site execution team.
- 7. Implement the Solution: The site execution team consisting of engineers and workers, who executes the construction of bridge as per the construction drawings.
After the completion of Step 7, the entire cycle is repeated starting from Step 1.

2. Design a storage and distribution system for the town of Waffle. The requirements are that fire protection
shall be provided, the minimum water pressure at the top of the apartments is to be 240 kPa and the
maximum system pressure is to be 550 kPa. The following assumptions may be used: Each of the four
apartment buildings is occupied by 50 residents. Each apartment building is four stories high. Each story is 3
meters high. Each house is occupied by three residents. Average daily demand for the village is 500 Lpcd and
the peak hourly demand factor is 6.2. Needed fire flow for the houses is 230 m3/h. and for apartment
building is 500 m3/h, with 2 h duration. System pressure is to be provided from the elevated storage tank.
Minor pressure losses in buildings may be ignored. The distribution system will not contain any loops. Assume
that emergency supply (ES), fire department supply (FDS) or off peak pumping are not provided (they are all
equal to zero). Provide the following…
