Introduction:
Alienation is the sense of separation from social connections. If I studied alienation between immigrant parents and their children, I would focus on language use inside and outside the home, conformity to the new (dominant) culture, and relationships with natives.
Explanation of Solution
Answer and explanation:
(This question requires a subjective answer, this is an example.) The children of immigrants who were born in the new country may experience alienation from their parents. Alienation is a weakening of a social connection often due to outside factors. I would compare reported feelings of alienation with factors such as whether the child speaks the immigrant family’s first language outside the home. For example, if the parents speak Korean in the home, does the child also speak Korean outside the home, or only English? I would also research how much the child conforms to social norms in the culture at large, especially if these norms conflict with the norms the parents brought with them. For example, if the parents value dressing modestly for cultural reasons, does the child dress to please the parents and home and change on the way to school to fit into the new culture? Another possible factor is whether the child has a close or romantic relationship with a person outside the culture of his or her parents, as this could lead to additional separation between parent and child.
