Chapter 5, Problem 1BS.1QC
Summary Introduction

To explain:

Whether the rapid cell response to changing environment would be short-or-long lived.

Introduction:

An organism responds to the internal and external environmental changes through cell signaling. The cells sense specific signals and elicit a response by communicating with each other through specific signaling molecules or chemical messengers.

Explanation of Solution

The signaling molecules present in the body helps a cell to respond to the changing external environments. To elicit a response, cells interact with each other through signaling molecules and receptor molecules by a cascade of reactions called signal transduction pathway.

Thus, cell signaling is important for cellular response. The rapid cell response is very important to avoid the changing environmental conditions. The rapid changes in the cells lead to the generation of a rapid short-term response. It helps the cells to make the changes faster. Slow and gradual stimuli are usually long lived. In case, the responses are long lived, then the two consecutive stimuli could overlap and may affect the cellular response.

If the cell needs to adapt to the changes rapidly, then the responses must be short-lived. In case the stimulus is long lived, the responses would overlap leading to miscommunication.

Conclusion

Rapid cellular response to the environmental changes is important and it should be short lived.

A negligence action was brought by a mother against a hospital on behalf of her minor daughter. It alleged that when the mother was 13 years of age, the hospital negligently transfused her with Rh-positive blood. The mother's Rh-negative blood was incompatible with and sensitized by the Rh-positive blood. The mother discovered her condition 8 years later during a routine blood screening ordered by her healthcare provider in the course of prenatal care. The resulting sensitization of the mother's blood allegedly caused damage to the fetus, resulting in physical defects and premature birth. Did a patient relationship with the transfusing hospital exist?
