Introduction: Based on the concentration and osmosis that takes place the solutions can be of three types. They are isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic. When animal cells (RBCs) are placed in a hypertonic solution, they shrivel whereas, in the case of plant cells, plasmolysis occurs.

Explanation of Solution
Pictorial representation:
In a solution, when the concentrations of the solute outside the cell are greater as compared with the concentration of the fluid or cytosol inside the cell, then it is said to be hypertonic. The term “hypo” means “deficient” and “tonos” means “stretching”. In a solution, when the concentrations of the solute outside the cell are less than the fluid or cytosol concentration present inside the cell, then it is said to be hypotonic.
