How does the compressor lubrication system differ for reciprocating and centrifugal compressors?
Difference in lubrication system of reciprocating and centrifugal compressor.
Answer to Problem 1RQ
Difference in lubrication system of reciprocating and centrifugal compressors has explained below.
Explanation of Solution
Compressor is a device which is used to compress the fluid.
Lubrication is required to reduce the heat and friction.
The centrifugal compressor consists of a separate pump, filter, cooler, oil lines and oil reservoir. The lubrication oil pumped from the reservoir to the various parts of the engine.
The reciprocating compressor consists of a small pump system which is driven by compressor crankshaft.
In reciprocating compressor, the lubricating oil pump is driven by compressor shaft whereas in centrifugal compressor, the oil pump is driven by separate motor.
Reciprocating compressor does not have separate sump for the oil, but centrifugal compressor has separate oil sump.

- A chemicals company wants to optimize the power consumption of their air compressors. Their Design Engineers proposed to replace their Single-stage Adiabatic Compressors with the following: a. Isothermal Compressorb. Two-stage Compressor with intercoolingc. Four-stage Compressor with intercooling In order to justify the replacement, the percentage of the energy per mass (J/g) saved by each proposed compressor system should be calculated. Savings should be at least 40%. Determine which of the three proposed compressors will meet the criterion. The flow rate of air required is 600 ft3/min at 70 °F and 14.7 psi, which should be compressed to a final pressure of 2,000 psig. The relative molecular mass of the gas is 28, isentropic constant is 1.40, and density of air is 1.204 kg/m3.arrow_forwardWhat are the applications of Backward Inclined centrifugal fans?arrow_forwarda reciprocating compressor handles 1001 cfmarrow_forward
