Receptors of some hormones function as ligand-dependent transcription factors. When hormone (ligand) binds to them, it forms a receptor–hormone complex. This receptor–hormone complex can then induce transcription of genes signaled by the hormone. The receptor–hormone complex binds to HRE (hormone response element), which is a specific DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequence.
