During her clinical experience in the HIV/infectious disease clinic, she met person P who is a homosexual single adult and had been diagnosed with AIDS. He came to the clinic for infusion therapy, which takes several hours. The nursing student was uncertain and confused about how to act in this situation. Her instructor thought that it would be a great learning experience.

The criteria that the nursing student used to evaluate a successful outcome are:
- Providing the nursing care in a respectful manner to the patient.
- Learning from the experience on how to be respectful with all patients and to interact in such a way that affirms their human dignity.
- Gaining knowledge about gender identity and expression through this experience.
It is the duty of the nursing student to provide care and support to her patient. In addition, she could also gain more experience of caring for the patients like person P. Thus, following these criteria in order to have a successful outcome of the patient care would be agreed.
