Chapter 44, Problem 15PIAT
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

The use of plain diethyl ether by researchers to dissolve the queen pheromone for the control treatment in the experiment.

Introduction:

The diethyl ether is a volatile compound present in the pheromones of the honey bees. The pheromone produced by the queen honeybee has diethyl ether present as a solvent in it. Furthermore, the diethyl ether may be involved in the inhibition of the ovarian growth.

The pheromone produced by the queen bee is capable of attracting the worker and the drones, however, the growth of ovaries is retarded in the worker bees. In order to test the hypothesis, the researcher exposed the worker bees to the chemically synthesized pheromones.

The ovary development score for worker bees was recorded in the study. In the graph shown below, the higher score indicates for the full development of ovaries. Furthermore, *** signifies for the value of probability less than 0.001.

There are many differences between DNA replication happening during mitosis in a Douglas fir tree growing in the Oregon Cascade Mountains and DNA replication happening during a PCR reaction in a forestry research lab at Oregon State University where the laboratory is amplifying a Simple Sequence Repeat. Complete the following table that compares the two DNA replication events in terms of the primers, the nucleotides, the polymerase, and the target sequence. Additionally, give a general value for the number of copies of the template DNA after one S phase in one cell and after the lab has completed the PCR reaction.
