Concept explainers
The similarity between baryons and mesons; the differences between baryons and mesons.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Hadrons are the particles that exerts strong nuclear force on each other. They are classified into two parts depending upon the decay into protons.
All particles exert nuclear force on each other. The particles that do not exert strong force are called leptons; the particles that exert strong force are hadrons.
Hadrons are made up of elementary particles called quarks. Hadrons are classified into two types; mesons and baryons.
The similarities between mesons and baryons are listed below.
- Both are composed of quarks.
- Both are the hadrons and exerts strong interaction.
The differences between mesons and baryons are listed below.
Baryons | Mesons |
They consist of three quarks and are fermions. | They consist of two quarks and are bosons. |
They have baryon number | They have baryon number |
They decay into protons. | They do not decay into protons. |
Conclusion:
Thus, the similarity between baryons and mesons is listed above; the differences between baryons and mesons is listed above.
