To discuss:
Why or why not do you agree with the criteria that the nursing student used to evaluate a successful outcome?
Case summary:
Mrs. S is a 72-year-old woman, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. She lived alone and after a lengthy hospital stay, she moved in with her daughter when it was determined that she is not capable of living alone. The nurse during her visit to provide home health care found that the patient was more depressed. She felt that she is a burden to her daughter. Though she is been treated for depression, the nurse was concerned of the effects that all this was having on her self-concept.
Explanation of Solution
The criteria that the nursing student used to evaluate a successful outcome are:
- Improving the self-concept of Mrs. S.
- Learning how to communicate with a sense of worth to vulnerable patients.
- Learning of how to address the problems of the patient with self-concept.
It is the duty of the nursing student to provide care and support to her patient. In addition, she could also gain more experience of caring for the patients like Mrs. S. Thus, following these criteria in order to have a successful outcome of the patient care would be agreed.
To discuss:
What knowledge, attitude, and skills do you need to develop to continuously improve the quality and safety of care for patients like Mrs. S?

Explanation of Solution
The nurse should learn the previous general community activities of the patient such as attending church services or something like that. The nurse could make the members of the community visit the patient. This will provide her with positive reinforcement of self-concept.
Encouraging the patient to recollect and to tell her past life experiences seems to be helpful to improve the safety and quality care for the patients like Mrs. S.
