Extra Moon. Suppose Earth had a second moon, called Swisscheese, with an average orbital distance double the Moon’s and a mass about the same as the Moon’s.
- Would Swisscheese’s orbital period be longer or shorter than the Moon’s? Explain.
- Use Kepler’s third law to find the approximate orbital period of Swisscheese. (Hint: You can solve this problem with Kepler’s original version of his third law by using the ratios of the orbital periods and distances of the two moons.)
- Describe how you would expect tides on Earth to differ because of the presence of this second moon. Consider cases in which the two moons are (i) on the same side of Earth, (ii) on opposite sides of Earth, and (iii) 90° apart in their orbits.
