Answer to Problem 4.4P

The shredder energy requirement for shredding is 7.61kWh/ton .

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The fraction of feed retained on sieve is shown in the table below:

    Sieve Size (inches) Fraction of Feed Retained on the Sieve
    10 0.05
    8 0.20
    4 0.32
    2 0.18
    1 0.20

Assume, from the figure that the axis is a logarithmic scale then for Y at 0.62 and 0.1 , the size of the product is 0.8in, and the size of the feed is 4in .

Calculation:

Write the equation to calculate the shredder energy requirement for shredding.

E=10Ei[ x 0 ( 1.61) 1 n]1210EiLf12 ...... (I)

Here, the shredder energy is E , the work index is Ei , the constant is n , the characteristic size is x0, and the length of the feed is Lf .

Write the equation to calculate the slope np .

np=Y1Y2x0pxp ...... (II)

Substitute 0.62 for Y1 , 0.1 for Y2 , 0.8 for x0p, and 0.08 for xp in Equation (II).

np=0.620.10.80.08=0.520.72=0.72

Write the equation to calculate the slope ns .

ns=Y1Y2x0fxf ...... (III)

Substitute 0.62 for Y1 , 0.1 for Y2 , 4 for x0f, and 2 for xf in Equation (III).

ns=0.620.142=0.522=0.26

The slope np is greater.

Calculate the shredder energy requirement for shredding.

Substitute 0.72 for n , 4in for Lf , 0.8in for x0, and 400kWh/ton in the Equation (I).

E=10( 400kWh/ton ) [0.8in×( 25400μm 1in) ( 1.61) 1 0.72] 12 10( 400kWh/ton ) [4in×( 25400μm 1in)] 12 =10( 400kWh/ton )198.410( 400kWh/ton )318.74=20.16kWh/ton12.55kWh/ton=7.61kWh/ton

Conclusion:

Thus, the shredder energy requirement for shredding is 7.61kWh/ton .
