Summary Introduction

To explain: The effects of increased sympathetic nervous system stimulation on body function and muscle tone.

Introduction: The sympathetic nervous system is often referred to as fight-or-fight division. The preganglionic neuron of the sympathetic system originates from the lumbar and thoracic regions of the spinal cord. The postganglionic neuron of the sympathetic system originates from sympathetic ganglion chain or collateral ganglia. The sympathetic nervous system activates the body for an emergency situation, largely through the release of norepinephrine from the postganglionic fibers, and secretion of epinephrine and dopamine from the adrenal medulla.
