Answer to Problem 25P

The example problem 8.3 in chapter 8 is divided using the 4.2 section described in textbook into the format “Given” ,“Find” , and  “Solution”, and the total distance travelled by the car is 50347.2m and the average speed of the car over its entire distance is 99.2kmh.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Car accelerates at speed of 100kmh in 15 seconds from rest,

The car moves with constant speed of 100kmh for about 30 minutes,and

The car decelerates to a full stop in 10 seconds.

Find:

Find the total distance travelled by the car and also find its average speed over this distance.

Solution:

The car speed is linearly increased from zero to 100kmh for the first 15 seconds.

Therefore, the average speed of the car is 50kmh for this period.

Formula to determine the distance travelled during this period (t1) is,

d1=(time)(averagespeed)=(15s)(50kmh)(1h3600s)(1000m1km)      [1h=3600s,and1km=1000m]=208.3m

For the next 30 minutes (1800 s), the car travels with a constant speed of 100kmh.

Formula to determine the distance travelled during this period (t2) is,

d2=(time)(averagespeed)=(1800s)(100kmh)(1h3600s)(1000m1km)      [1h=3600s,and1km=1000m]=50000m

For the last 10 sec, the car decelerates at a constant speed of 100kmh to zero and attains a full stop of the car.

Therefore, the average speed of the car during the last 10 sec is also 50kmh for this period

Formula to determine the distance travelled during this period (t3) is,

d3=(time)(averagespeed)=(10s)(50kmh)(1h3600s)(1000m1km)      [1h=3600s,and1km=1000m]=138.9m

Formula to determine the total distance covered by the car is,

d=d1+d2+d3=208.3m+50000m+138.9m=50347.2m

Convert the unit of total distance from m to km

d=50347.2m=50.3472×103m=50.3472km

Formula to determine the average speed of the car for the entire duration of the travel is,

Vaverage=distancetravelledtime=50347.2m1825s=27.58ms

Convert the unit of average speed from ms to kmh.

Vaverage=(27.58ms)(3600s1h)(1km1000m)[1h=3600s,and1km=1000m]=99.2kmh

Conclusion:

Hence, the example problem 8.3 in chapter 8 is divided using the 4.2 section described in textbook into the format “Given” ,“Find” , and  “Solution”,

Figure 1 shows the plan view of an Exhibition Hall with dimensions L1 x L2. The structure is to be constructed in a coastal region which will be exposed to mostly mild environmental conditions and should provide a 1.5-hour fire resistance. It is known that the underlying foundation soil contains sulphate and other organic compounds. The layout of the structure consists of portal frames which are spaced evenly along the L2 direction. The frames are to support a slab of thickness (t) that will cover the full area of the hall plan. The dead and live loads applied on the slab are G and Q (kPa), respectively.
A sample of Achilles saturated with water has a mass of 1710 g. After heating in an oven, a constant mass of 1815 g is obtained. The density of solid Achilles seeds is 2.78 g/cm3. We are asked to calculate: a) The water content and void ratio b) The porosity and specific gravity of the clayey soil c) The wet density of the clayey soil, the corresponding dry density and dry density
