Answer to Problem 1RQ

Magma and water crystallizes when the suitable temperature is attained. But magma can crystallize at various temperatures as different compounds, where as water crystallizes at a particular temperature without any compositional change. Hence, they differ.

Explanation of Solution

Magma is the molten rock that is present deep inside the surface. When it reaches the surface it is called as lava. Magma, when cooled at certain pressure and temperature, it crystallizes and forms rocks of different compositions at different depths.

Water when kept at 0°C starts crystallizing. If the temperature is maintained as such, all the water converts to form ice. The same happens with magma. When the temperature is suitable for crystallization process, they start crystallizing. This crystallizing phenomenon is complex in this case because of the presence of multiple compounds in the magma.

As a result of various compounds present, all the crystals formed are not of same composition. Different crystals are formed at different temperatures. Thus, the early formed rocks are maffic whereas the later formed rocks are felsic. This process is known as Fractional Crystallization.

There is an old axiom (a self-evident or universally recognized truth) of economics that “There is no such thing as a free lunch”. In the United States, stringent, enforced water quality laws and regulations provide a high level of protection of our waters. This is accomplished at a significant cost. For example, (sewage treatment plants use 2% of the electricity produced in the United States. This high level of protection increases the cost of goods manufactured in the United States compared to other nations such as China where standards are lower, enforcement a bit lax and in some cases, non-existent. What five (5) things could be done to “level the playing field” so that all manufacturers must provide the same degree of water quality protection no matter where in the world they are located? include how each of your ideas will be implemented (ex: which organization will be provided the power and resources to make sure each idea happens). These should be only about water pollution,…
Connecticut is the only state in America where treated industrial and municipal wastewater cannot be discharged to a surface water body used downstream as a source of drinking water. It is legal in all 49 other states. For example, New Orleans, Louisiana takes its drinking water from the Mississippi River which receives discharges of many, many treated municipal and industrial wastewater discharges as well as agricultural runoff from the more than 20 states that are upstream of it. Should other states be required to adopt Connecticut's standard? Why
