To review:
The given blank space in the statement, “While the physician was treating the patient’s failing heart, the respiratory therapist worked to offset the patient’s poor oxygenation by increasing the patient’s ______, which is _____ of Fick’s law.”
Introduction:
In the given case, the patient suffers from pulmonary edema. This affected the thickness of alveolar space and capillary membrane thickness. The thickness of the membrane has increased. The increased thickness results in lowering the rate of diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide across the alveolar-capillary system. This is because according to Fick’s law, the thickness is indirectly related to the rate of diffusion.

- As a result of the excessive blood loss, the patient's Pa(o2) of 503 mm Hg and Sa(o2) of 98 percent were very misleading. Which oxygen transport studies verified this fact? _______________________________________________arrow_forwardThe fact that the initial pH (7.10) and HCO(3)- (21 mEq/L) were both lower than expected for an acute increase in the Pa(co2) (70 mm Hg) suggested that there were additional ______ present in the patient's blood.arrow_forwardPulmonary arteries Systemic veins Right heart Partial Pressures of Gases Copyright © The McGraw-H Companies, Inc.
