Answer to Problem 1E

Correct answer: The statement is false.

Explanation of Solution

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder(DSM-5) is an attempt to provide doctors a much-needed definite list of all diagnosed mental health conditions and their symptoms. It is the latest version of DSM wherein some of the diagnostic labels have been changed. For example, Asperger’s syndrome and autism were combined under the label autism spectrum disorder. New disorders such as bingeeating disorder and hoarding disorder were added. Critics suggest that DSM is casting too wide a net and bringing in new disorders, therebybranding some normal behaviors as mental illness. It also reflected issues that actually divide the society. It is highly controversial and is not considered as a suitable guide.

Hence, the statement is false.
