Answer to Problem 1DQ

The electron would have longer wavelength.

Explanation of Solution

The de Broglie wavelength of any particle or any object is the ratio Plank’s constant and momentum. Since the de Broglie wave length inversely proportional to the momentum of the particle or object, hence inversely proportional to the mass and velocity of the particle or object.

Here both electron and proton moves with same speed. Since according to the definition of de Broglie wavelength, the wavelength for a moving particle or object is inversely proportional to the mass and speed.

In this case speed of the both particle is same. Therefore the other quantity which depends on the wavelength is mass. The particle with lower mass would have shorter wavelength and vice versa. Thus, compared to proton electron has lower mass. Thus, electron exhibit longer de Broglie wavelength.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the electron would have longer wave length.
