Introduction: The vivid orange, black, and white patterns on monarch butterflies make them stand out among other enormous, gorgeously colorful butterflies. The vibrant color of a monarch gives a signal to predators: Eat me not because I am poisonous. The only food source for the butterflies, while they are in the caterpillar stage, is milkweed, which is where the butterflies acquire their toxins from.
