The total number of live births per 1,000 individuals in a population is referred to as the birth rate. The annual sum of deaths per 1,000 individuals in a population is referred to as the mortality rate. A population is considered to be expanding if the ratio of births to deaths is greater than the opposite, but a population is said to be shrinking if the ratio of births to deaths is higher.
