The relative temperatures of stars
Answer to Problem 1Q
The reddish star is coolest, bluish star is hottest and whitish-yellow star temperature is greater than reddish star and lesser than bluish star.
Explanation of Solution
Color of the star determines its temperatures. Since, the temperature is related to the frequency of the emitted light, the light with greater frequency has greater temperature and the light with lesser frequency has lesser temperature.
Among red, whitish-yellow, and blue color, red color is at the lowest frequency, followed by a whitish-yellow. Blue color is at highest frequency. Therefore, the reddish star is coolest, bluish star is hottest and whitish-yellow star temperature is greater than reddish star and lesser than bluish star.
Conclusion:
Therefore, hottest star among the three is bluish star, the coolest is reddish star, and the whitish- yellow star is in between the bluish and reddish star.
