To discuss:
How the nurse encourages Mrs. A to express her feelings and provide specific statements that would illicit robust responses from Mrs. A.
Case summary:
An 80-year-old Mrs. A is being hospitalized by her neighbor when they found her lying in the floor. When hospitalized, her blood pressure is low, she is dehydrated and weak. Moreover, she has severe back pain and also a pain in toes that makes her unable to walk. Mrs. A has lost her weight due to loss of appetite and her medical examinations reveal to have a terminal illness, a kind of leukemia. Mrs. A has been living alone after her husband’s death two years ago and she gets help and support from her only daughter who lives out of town, neighbor, and church community. The nurse finds out Mrs. A is upset and tearful, nurse talks with her to assess her situation and to gather information.

Explanation of Solution
The nurse should develop a caring relationship with the patient and she should have a frequent conversation with the patient. The nurse should also mention the patient’s desire, achievements, and priorities. Make the patient get more emotional that they would open-up their grief and tell what they were through. Mrs. A might state that doctor say that would have cancer and she is not willing to find out from the test and she also states that her time is over and she willing to join with her late husband.
The grieving of the patient might be based on her disease or it can be an anticipatory grief to die and leave her loved one behind.
