The extension of root depth and spread of a plant differ for another plant species and it also varies among individuals of same species. For the survival of plant, firm anchorage is essential so that the stem remains upright that enable leaves to absorb sunlight efficiently. The roots absorb water and dissolved minerals. The dissolved minerals are transported from roots to the leaves throughout the plant in the xylem.
