Answer to Problem 1ASA

The principle of Geiger counter is to produce ionization from one ion to another so that a pulse can be produced.

Explanation of Solution

Geiger counter is the instrument which is used for detecting and measuring the ionizing radiations from a radioactive substance. The counter is used for detecting ionizing radiation such alpha particles, beta particles and gamma rays.

The basic principle of Geiger counter is when an ionizing particle passes through the gas in the chamber, it produces few ions. If the applied potential is strong the ions will produce secondary avalanche of ions whose energy is proportional to the energy associated with primary ionizing.

If the applied potential is very high then the secondary ionization becomes more dominant than the primary ionization. The ionization produces cause another ion to ionize. The ionization produces a pulse from which the number on incoming particles can be counted.

Conclusion:

Thus, the principle of Geiger counter is to produce ionization from one ion to another so that a pulse can be produced.
