Chapter 36, Problem 10TYPSS
Summary Introduction
To review:
An experiment using a heavy isotope of nitrogen (15N2) and radioactively labeled carbon for determining whether the pea plant–rhizobia interaction is mutualistic.
Introduction:
Mutualism is defined as the interaction between the organisms that symbolizes the benefit of both the organisms. The well-being of two different species is dependent on their interaction as they provide benefit in one way or the other. Rhizobia are the nitrogen-fixing bacteria (diazotrophs) after becoming established inside the root nodules of leguminous plants (pea plants).

Discuss the following prompt:
In this experiment, we are looking to see how much different types of soil will affect the time it takes for pinto Bean seedlings to germinate out of the ground. The scientific name of a pinto bean is Phaseolus vulgaris. Pinto beans are kind of beans people usually eating, and people commonly use pinto beans in many dishes, such as rice and pasta. Planting pinto beans need many necessary factors, however, I think the type of soil is the most important one to grow it faster. Pinto beans are kind of plants can grow in dark and dry area, so even in dark (less light), they can grow as well. The goal is to determine that soils have different characteristics that can help or hurt plant growth.
In order to discover the effects soils have on plant growth, three different soil samples will be used in a controlled study. The samples will vary in consistency, texture, color, location, moisture, and contact with human life to ensure that the samples are…

- A group of researchers wanted to determine how leaf herbivory and seed production of a legume plant (legumes are a family of plants which includes beans and lentils) were affected by the presence of its mutualistic rhizobia (a group of nitrogen-fixing bacteria). They designed an experiment with two treatments: (1) rhizobia absent and herbivores present and (2) rhizobia present and herbivores present. Provide two additional treatments and briefly explain how they would contribute to our understanding of the results of this experiment.arrow_forwardPlease answer asap and in short and content should not be palgarised pleasearrow_forwardIn the early 1800s, potatoes became the main food staple for the people of Ireland. In 1845, a fungus native to South America, Phytophthora infestans, began to infect potato plants, causing potato blight and making the tubers inedible. Over the next several years, most of the potato plants in the country were destroyed by this invasive species. Which of the following statements correctly explains why the Irish potato famine occurred? A - The arrival of ships from South America led to human introduction of the disease. B - A drought across Ireland in 1844 led to more damaged potato plants that were susceptible to infection. C - An increase in trade with other European countries led to the introduction of plants that were already infected with the fungus. D - Ireland’s climate became closer to that of South America, which allowed the fungus to infect potato plants and reproduce.arrow_forward
- How do the authors of the study interpret the information shown in Figure 3? (Choose one.) Group of answer choices The speed (number of days) at which fig saplings die from wilting disease is much faster when the saplings are inoculated with two species of fungi at the same time, compared to only one of the species. The number of days which saplings survive is significantly longer when fig saplings are inoculated with C. ficicola and F. kuroshium at the same time, compared to just inoculated with C. ficicola. There were significantly higher densities of C. ficicola than of F. kuroshium found in plants suffering from fig wilt disease. The number of saplings dying from fig wilt disease was significantly higher in plants inoculated with C. ficicola than in plants inoculated with F. kuroshium plus C. ficicola.arrow_forward1. O A. The experiment is invalid because she used the same type of plant in all the trials. The experiment is valid because all the factors except the experiment variable were kept constant.
