Nothing by mouth (NOP) is termed as to withhold fluids and foods. It is also called as nil per os. It is a policy that refrains the patient from drinking or eating anything orally. The NPO policy is very crucial because patients with occupied stomach are at risk for attaining liquid or food in their lungs during anesthesia, which may cause pneumonia and other serious health issues.
